Marty was the son of Anna and Sam (Phillip) Lifshitz, who immigrated to this country from eastern Europe. Born in Manhattan, he was raised in the Bronx, and graduated from James Monroe High School. He was a loving son, a kind and caring brother to his younger sister, Marilyn, and close friend to many. He enjoyed billiards, stickball, dancing and entertaining with his friends at their basement “Club Ebony”. He loved going to Yankee games, and even tried out to play 3rd base for the NY Yankees, earning a call back!.
He was drafted to the US Army in 1943, and was assigned to the 99th Infantry Division, 393rd Regimen. As a ‘Battle Baby’ he saw fierce action on the front lines in the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Upon returning home after WWII, he joined with his brothers-in-law in 1947 to form Tri-Vet Belt Company, a Garment Center business that manufactured ladies belts. He worked diligently in this business through up and down cycles and changes in fashion, until his retirement in 1989. He developed strong relationships with his customers and colleagues, and was a generous and considerate boss to his employees.
In 1947 he married the love of his life, Renee, whom he started dating at age 17. Marty and Renee had three children and raised them with strong values of education, hard work, and family devotion. They were incredibly proud of their large and loving family, and cherished all their celebrations and times together. Marty absolutely adored his wife, and their home was filled with happiness, love, laughter and music. They were married for 73 years. After Renee’s passing in 2020, he missed her intensely, but despite his grief he continued to be a source of strength, warmth, love and constant devotion to his family.
Marty was known for his wisdom, gentle loving and giving spirit, enormous resilience, and for the genuine kindness, compassion and generosity that he showed to all his friends and family. He showed his love to all without hesitation, and was beloved by all.
He leaves behind his children Barbara and Bruce Klein, Edward and Deborah Landon, Judith and Ned “Skip” Cooney; grandchildren Rafe Klein, Jen Kopchik, Sarah Cooney, Dan Cooney, Aaron Landon, Hannah Landon; great-grandchildren Brianna, Ella, Leila, Julian, Charlie, Oliver, and Fiona; and his sister, Marilyn Shtulman. He also leaves behind loving caregivers Fay, Heather, Mervis and Sonia who provided loving care and companionship and became part of our family.
He will be terribly missed.
