Irma lived in Brooklyn, New York their whole childhood where they helped out with the family business Candy Store. She had many stories she loved to tell about her early life working at the Candy Store: serving customers egg creams and malteds, making nickel tips which she would later use to go to the local movie theater and helping customers who had no phone so they can use the one at the candy store. She claims her early experience at the Candy store is one of the reasons she was so good at math and her life long career as a book keeper.
When she was 20, she married Charles Klain, who she later divorced in 1977. They set up their life in Brooklyn and later Staten Island, New York where they raised 3 children. Family was always of great importance to Phyllis. She would say…cut off any one of my fingers and it would equally hurt meaning…she loved all her children equally.
In 1981 she retired and moved to Coconut Creek, Florida. She was very involved with many volunteer organizations including tutoring children and Jewish organizations. She served as Treasurer for the local ORT where she helped raise much needed funding.
Phyllis was loved by many and was often called the “favorite aunt” to many of her relatives. She is survived by her 3 children (Judith Marty and Evelyn) , 6 grandchildren (Michael, Sofia, Hannah, Lindsey, Kristi, and William, and her 5 great grandchildren (Alex, Lucia, Camila, Brayden, and Summer).
Phyllis will be deeply missed.
