

Born on June 21, 1945 in Willoughby Township to his parents Jim and Sally Sauer. Doug was raised near the family farm, where he spent his childhood and made many memories with his siblings, relatives and friends. Doug attended Willoughby SS #5, Black Creek Public School, AN. Myer and Westlane when it opened in 1960.
Doug was employed by General Motors, St Catharines from October 1964 until retirement February 2006, as an Assembler, Tow Motor Driver and finished in the Tool Crib/Stores. Owner/Operator of Riverside Park Motel and Campground from 1986 to 1993. Retirement was not in Doug’s dictionary, finishing his working career at Rosehill Auction House.
Doug enjoyed our yearly trips to Orlando, camping at Provincial Parks and Sherkston Shores with family and friends. Pittsburgh and other arenas was a yearly destination to see his favourite team the Penguins. Most recently, we made memories at our seasonal site on the Grand River.
Doug spent over 50 years as a Volunteer for Niagara Falls Minor Hockey and Greater Fort Erie Minor Hockey. His motto..all players come first! Doug was very proud of his players, followed their careers and remained friends with many of them. Doug also spent many years volunteering with Fort Erie Figure Skating Club.
Doug is survived by his wife Janelle, sharing 42 years together. Their 2 children, daughter Chelsea Alexis, partner Mike and Robert James (Bobby), partner Megan. Papa loved spending his time with his 2 grandchildren, Arwyn Bobbie (aka Wynni) and Shea James. Father of Kimberly. Friend of Derek, spouse Melissa and Kelly, spouse Mike. Grandpa Doug to their children.
Doug was the beloved Brother of Linda (d. Frank), Marj, Pat (Ron), Ross (Kelly), Stan (Carol) and Jack (Tracey).
Brother-in-Law of Timmy, Susie (Stu), Tommy (Debbie), Libby (Mark), Colleen (John), Maureen (Keith), Michael (Mary) and Cheryl.
Doug will be fondly remembered by his many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Benner Funeral Services 1105 Benner Ave., Fort Erie entrusted with arrangements. In keeping with Doug’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The Family will receive Family and Friends the Funeral Home, on Tuesday June 9th from 5 – 8 pm. Funeral Services will be held at the Chapel on Wednesday at 1 o’clock. *Please wear your favourite sports jersey to the visiting and funeral*. Interment to follow by Burial at Sauer’s Church, Willoughby.
After the service – Family and Friends will meet at the Plaice Restaurant from 3-5 where we will celebrate Doug’s life with a light lunch and cocktail.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to the NHS Walker Family Cancer Centre or Hospice Niagara Willson House Fort Erie.
