April 19, 1930 – September 12, 2026
Gwen passed away peacefully at Garrison Place on Saturday September 12, 2026 at the age of 96. Loving and devoted wife to Angus for 69 years. Proud mother to Neil (Debbie), William “Bill” (Mastu), and Marion (Richard). Cherished grandma to Alex (Robyn), Erin (Devin), Michelle (Charles), Joseph (Maranda), Sarita, and Nala. Beloved great grandma to Amelia, Darcy, Ellis, Sully, Thea, Elizabeth, and Abigail. She is predeceased by her sisters Marion and Pat, and her in-laws, Alex and Christine. Gwen was born in Perth, Ontario to the late Gordon and Christine Barr. Her family then moved to Gravenhurst where she grew up with her two sisters, Marion and Pat. She continued to have a life-long love of the Muskokas. She often talked about the fun she had as a teenager working on the steamship Sagamo, which travelled to the many ports on the Muskoka Lakes. She studied nursing at Toronto Western and was working as a public health nurse in Seaforth, Ontario, when she met Angus who was a teacher there. They played badminton together and fell in love. After getting married in Gravenhurst, they drove out west to Port Alberni, British Columbia, and began their family. However, Gwen was not a fan of the rainy west coast climate, and after a year, they drove back across the country to settle in Fort Erie. Mom was a kind, caring, hardworking, nurse at Douglas Memorial Hospital where she brought many babies into the world. Even after retirement, her nursing skills came in handy for family members seeking advice or first aid. Gwen and Angus raised three children, adored their six grandchildren and their precious seven great-grandchildren. Children were always Gwen’s priority. Gwen attended the United Church faithfully well into her 90’s. She was actively involved in supporting the United Church fundraising missions and community activities. Mom you will be missed by so many of the people you touched. The family invites you to a visitation on Friday September 18, 2026 from 1:00 pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 2:00 pm in the Benner Chapel (1105 Benner Avenue, Fort Erie) Internment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Donations in Gwen’s memory may be made to the Douglas Memorial Auxiliary, Diabates Canada, or a charity of your choice.
