It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Michael Francis Keating, on October 23, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born December 2, 1938, in Auckland, New Zealand, Mike wasted no time proving that life would be an adventure. Before he was even two years old, while travelling to Canada with his mother aboard the RMS Niagara, he became part of a remarkable piece of history when the ship struck German mines and sank off the coast of New Zealand. Thankfully, everyone aboard survived, including Mike and his mother. They eventually completed their journey to Canada a few years later.
It was only the beginning to a lifetime of adventures — and certainly not his last close call.
Mike spent most of his life in Fort Erie, where he was a proud and loving father who enjoyed the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing, playing cards, shooting craps and, of course, betting on the horses. If there was a game to play or a wager to make, Mike was usually interested.
He spent 30 years working at General Motors in St. Catharine's, where he formed friendships that lasted long after retirement. Many of the stories he shared over the years came from his time at GM, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and more than a few adventures.
One of Mike's favorite places to be was his front porch. Friends and neighbors would stop by unannounced for a drink, often stay longer than planned, and leave with a laugh, a good story, and sometimes a little less money in their pockets. Those visits, friendships and shared memories were among the things he enjoyed most.
Mike was predeceased by his beloved mother, Frances Keating; his father, Wray Keating; and his son, Michael Wray Keating.
He is survived by his wife, Karin Keating; his son, Gordon Keating; his daughter, Kelly Keating (Peter Macfarlane); his brother, Patrick Keating; his niece, Katie Keating; and his nephew, Sean Keating (Tricia).
He also leaves behind too many friends to mention, more stories than anyone could keep track of, and a reputation for doing things his own way.
Mike will be remembered as a devoted and loving dad, an avid hunter and outdoorsman, a loyal friend, and a man who was always ready for a good time. Life around Mike was never dull, and there was never a shortage of laughs, adventures or a good story to share.
If you knew Mike, chances are you have a few stories of your own — and Kelly and Gordy would love to hear them, share them on this site. Also, check back here and when we figure out the location, date and time of the celebration of life, we will post it.
Mike Keating, 87 years old. What a run.
