

Alan was born in Cobourg, ON on February 25, 1919 to George Lowe and Jessie Diack. A well educated man, he attended the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph and obtained a Degree in Agriculture. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Radar Mechanic and was then shipped to England where he service for 3 1/2 years. In 1945, Al taught veterans of the RCAF in Hamilton. The following year, he became an Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of New Brunswick. In 1946, he married Katherine Wagner and became a loving father to son Alan Jr and daughter Sally. In 1949 he obtained his Masters Degree in Physics from Western University in London. Following a short stint as a professor, he rejoined the Royal Canada Air Force in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he held many high ranking positions for the next 10 years. From 1960-1962, Al taught physics at Clinton High School.. In 1962, the family moved to Fort Frances where Al taught Physics at FFHS for 21 years.He also held the positions of Science Dept Head and Vice Principal. Al served as a councillor on the Town of Fort Frances Council plus served on many boards and committees.
In 1980, his wife Kay passed away after a long struggle with cancer. In 1981 Al met Chris Lovisa and they were married on October 10th of that year, acquiring 5 additional children -3 married, 1 almost married and a 16 year old daughter plus 2 grandchildren. What a brave man! Al served 2 terms as Reeve of the Township of Alberton (Crozier). He was active in Teacher Federation Boards, MNR, Rainy Lake Conservancy and wrote articles on Nature and Science for 4 newspapers for about 30 years.
Alan leaves to mourn, his wife Chris; daughter Sally (Dale Burlington); stepchildren Karen (Dave) Egan, Don (Cheryl) Lovisa, Diane (Paul) Noonan, David (Carla) Lovisa, Barb (Claude) Jodoin, 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was dearly loved by all who knew him. Al was predeceased by his son. Alan Jr, his parents and 3 half brothers.
Al was very proud of his Scottish background. He played bagpipes for many years and given a scotch or two would proudly reveal what he wore under his kilt. With fond memories and a life well lived, fill your glass with Scotch and raise a toast to the man we all love.
Funeral services will he held Thursday, May 8 at the Church he loved, Knox United at 11 a.m. The honourary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
He will be dearly missed.
