Doreen Mounk (nee Killins), devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to so many, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer. She left this world surrounded by loved ones.
Doreen was born to Gladys and Ard (Archie) Killins on August 31st, 1926, in Fort William, Ontario. It is here that she met her husband Maurice Mounk, whom she married on September 13, 1945. Together they raised their four children: Dale, Glen, Luanne, and Dennis, in Fort William and Port Arthur and then relocated to Fort Frances in 1975.
Nothing was more important to Doreen than her family. Spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought her great joy. Whether chatting over tea, going out for lunch, or watching sports on tv, any time spent with her was valuable time. Her family especially enjoyed her witty sense of humour. Even the darkest day could become brighter after time spent with “Gram.” Doreen made sure that her family knew how special they were to her; she loved unconditionally, and in turn was adored by all.
Doreen always looked and acted much younger than her years. Age did not slow her down! She bowled at Plaza Lanes and did Aquafit at the Sportsplex well into her 80’s. She enjoyed bus tours to Branson with Evelyn and Diane, courageously flew on her own to visit her brother George in Florida, visited her sister Dorothy in Pincher Creek, and loved going to Evelyn’s trailer at Berglund. She also had her weekly dates with the ladies, her breakfast group, where even at 90 years old she could be seen driving them to Subway for breakfast Wednesday mornings and Wal-Mart on Fridays. And don’t forget Super One - where she prided herself on finding a good deal every time!.
Doreen was an active member of her church for many years. She lived a true Christian life, and was a loving mentor to many. As much as she mourned leaving her family behind, she looked forward to going to a better place where she could walk with Jesus.
Doreen leaves behind her children Dale (Cindy) Mounk, Glen Mounk, Luanne (Murray) Mounk, Dennis Mounk; grandchildren Amy (Brian) Spicer, Chris (Jenn) Mounk, Michelle Grondin, Rachel Grondin, Jeffrey (Jessica) Grondin, Stevens McKay; great-grandchildren Lynton, Mikael, and Kali Mounk, Leah Enns, Mia and Brynn Berry, and Aubrey Grondin. Doreen was the last surviving Aunt to all of the Killins and Mounk nieces and nephews. As well she leaves behind special friends Nancy Hanna, Evelyn Barker, Diane Bell, Helen Banman, and Wylma Redford.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband Maurice Mounk, her parents Gladys and Archie Killins, her siblings George Killins, Dorothy Dyck and Norma Gibson.
A special thank you goes out to “her” Doctor Nugent, whose care and concern meant so much to Doreen and her family.
Funeral service will be held Monday, September 10, 2018 at 11:00 am at Bethel Baptist Church, 720 Morrison Crescent, Fort Frances.
Doreen will be missed by all who knew her beautiful, giving spirit.
If desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the Women's Auxiliary at LaVerendrye Hospital or Fort Frances Meals on Wheels.
