In loving memory of John Fred Major, 87 years of age passed away at Rainycrest in Fort Frances on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
Fred was born to Lizzie Major and John Major, August 30, 1934.
He was placed at St. Marguerite's Residential School at age 11 and was discharged October 14, 1949. While there, he played hockey.
As a younger man, Fred worked as a guide for tourist camps, logging, road and building Construction with various businesses. He liked to go to pow wows, and other various events, often advising the younger generation. He was a historian regaling tales of long ago. As an Elder, he committed himself to teaching Anishinaabe Ways and to care for the community. He would share with anyone who wanted to learn.
Fred was an excellent craftsman, birch bark baskets, most of his beautiful works were sent to other countries. He also enjoyed wood carving, making snow snakes, paddles, ricing sticks just to name a few.
Every spring after ice breakup he would set a net out and there at the dock he would tell humorous stories while cleaning fish. He would then share his catch with community members.
Fred was predeceased by his parents John and Lizzie Major and also a sister Mary.
He will be surely missed by all his relatives and friends from MFN and the surrounding communities.
Wake will be held at Mitaanjigamiing Multi-Use Friday, September 17, 2021.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Mitaanjigamiing Multi-Use with Elder Ralph Johnson officiating. Interment will take place at Mitaanjigamiing Cemetery.
