Mary Lindholm

With family by her side, Mary Lindholm (nee Sloboda) passed away peacefully at La Verendrye General Hospital on Monday, February 5, 2018 at the age of 97 years old. She was gracious, kind, and loving, and will be dearly missed by those who knew her.

Mary was born on June 26, 1920 in Fort Frances, Ontario to Wasyl (Bill) and Anna Sloboda. She was the second eldest of five children. After their father’s sudden and tragic passing in 1931, Mary’s mother did everything she could as a single parent and sole provider to care for her children and raise them well. Mary respected and loved her mother very much.

At the age of 16 years old, Mary began working full time in Fort Frances, first at Flinders dairy and then at a local boarding house. In October 1939, she met Victor Brynold “Bruno” Lindholm while out one night with a friend. Bruno was smitten with Mary, and they were united in marriage on August 18, 1940. Following WWII, they settled down to raise two sons, Rick and Dorian, and enjoyed many adventures together over the years. Mary and Bruno celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary prior to Bruno’s passing on March 17, 2013.

Mary was a long-time member of the Knox United Church and maintained her faith in God throughout her life. She enjoyed knitting and embroidery, getting together with friends to play cards, travelling with Bruno and family, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mary lived a good life. She had a keen mind and a resilient spirit. During her final days, she shared her love, hopes, and goodbyes with family members before welcoming the good Lord to take her home.

Mary leaves behind her sons: Richard and wife Barbara, and Dorian and wife Judith; granddaughters: Anna and husband Jason Cunningham, and Amy and husband Joe Taylor; great-grandchildren: Kaylen, Ty and Jordyn; brother-in-law, Everett Ramsey; sisters-in-law: Helen, Isabelle, and Irene Lindholm; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wasyl and Anna Sloboda; husband, Victor; siblings: Jessie Budiselic, Nellie Leikam, Anne Ramsey, and Stanley Sloboda; as well as several extended family members.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Riverview Cemetery in June 2018 (details to be announced at a future date).
