Edward John Moser

Edward grew up in Ossining, New York. As a youth he frequently explored the campus of the headquarters of the Maryknoll Missionary Society and befriended the brothers who worked on the grounds. After graduation from high school Edward felt called to attend the Maryknoll Seminary in Glen Ellyn, Illinois where he graduated in 1965 and entered novitiate in Hingham, Massachusetts. When he realized that his true calling was to the laity, he moved back to Ossining and began his teaching career at St. Mary’s School in Yonkers, New York.

His natural ability to captivate a room full of junior high students also led him to develop a passion for music and theater, which continued throughout his entire life, including amateur theater companies and a stint as a vocalist and bass player with the band “MB2”. He also maintained a passionate affection for his beloved Dobermans.

While vacationing in South Florida he met his future partner, Michael Gouge, in 1976. He then relocated to Florida where he resumed his teaching career at St. Hugh’s School in Coconut Grove. Edward and Michael’s love for the west drew them to move to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 1987 to be close to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, a place that Edward consider magical. During his time in Jackson, Edward particularly treasured his time managing the historic Jackson Drug Soda Fountain, where he got to know many of Jackson’s locals and some of its celebrities. He relocated to South Florida in 2006 when he “just got tired of shoveling off the roof four times each winter”.

During his time in Jackson Hole, he was an active member of Our Lady of Mountains Catholic Church, and in Fort Lauderdale was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, serving as a reader, a eucharistic minister, and singing in the choir in both parishes.

His faith was deep, and he often said, “I left Maryknoll, but Maryknoll never left me”. In his last days he reminded those around him that he was not afraid but considered this transition a time of great joy.

He is survived by his spouse and partner of 45 years, Michael Gouge, Dotty, his beloved rescue Doberman, his sister Anne Lebess of Florida, his brother William Moser of New York, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas, and his parents, Thomas and Anna Moser. Edward will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life Service will take place at Broward Burial and Cremation, 1801 East Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306 at 6 PM on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. The following day, Wednesday, April 14, at 10 am, a funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church at 1701 East Oakland Park Boulevard in Oakland Park, Florida, with interment immediately following at All Saints Episcopal Church 333 Tarpon Drive in Fort Lauderdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward "Ted" Moser's memory to any of the Maryknoll Missionary organizations or to the Humane Society.
