Erwin (Ed) Gerrish Kerr, Jr. born September 18, 1921, in Amarillo,TX, passed away peacefully early in the afternoon on Friday, August 3, 2018, in Pembroke Pines, FL. His father was the late Erwin Gerrish Kerr, Sr. and mother was Mary Varner. He had one sister, the late Mary Ellen Kerr. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Helen, two sons, Charles and Marshall, daughter in-law, Dianne, stepson, James, stepdaughters, Sylvia and Helen Ann, and stepdaughters-in-law, Gun and Gladys, plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Virginia, after 54 years of marriage, and his stepsons, Douglas and Alfred, and daughter-in-law, Missy.
Mr. Kerr graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1939. He then enlisted in the United States Navy, and was later assigned to the destroyer USS Helm. He was on board the Helm in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Sunday 7 Dec 1941, during the Japanese attack. He served throughout the Pacific in numerous campaigns, including the Battle of Coral Sea. He remained in the Naval Reserves until his retirement in 1972, as a Chief Petty Officer. In the early 1950’s, he began work as a computer programmer and later as a systems analyst for the Air Weather Service, an agency of United States Air Force. He also had a career as a carpenter, which he was equally proud of. In addition, he served as a fill-in preacher and a song leader at different congregations throughout his life. He will be forever remembered for his love for the church, his family and this country. He had a one-of-a-kind personality who left an impression on anyone he met. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Also, the arrangements are as follows: A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 19th, 2018 at 2:30 p.m., at the Baffy Woods Condominium meeting room, in Cooper City.
