Hazel was born in Jamaica on July 7, 1927 to parents Arthur John Vickers and Gladys Emily Vickers [nee Sankey]. She was the second of 8 children. She worked full time at National Commercial Bank Jamaica Ltd. Hazel married Joscelyn Loche Lewis Tomlinson and had two children, Joscelyn (Tony) and Christine, both the light and pride of her life. When she tragically lost her husband in her early 40s, she proved herself resourceful and resilient as a single mother. She eventually immigrated to the United States to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Robin Crawford, helping to raise their 3 children.
Hazel was a strong advocate of traditional values and time-honored Jamaican customs - formality, decorum, Christianity, community. She preserved and instilled those values into her children as well as theirs - linking the previous generations to those that follow.
Throughout her life, Hazel cultivated deep and lasting friendships. Her circle was wide and her connections strong, many lasting multiple decades. She had a wit and dry sense of humor that endeared her to friends and strangers alike, paired with a thoughtful and generous nature.
Her family and friends will fondly remember the comforting scent and taste of her baked goods — cookies, cakes, puddings and buns — recipes she perfected over the years and shared as a reflection of her love, sincerity, and camaraderie. Hazel was hard-working, determined, engaging, decisive, unwavering in the face of hardship, and of course, she never ever stopped moving, despite being in her tenth decade of life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, grandson (Kurt) and 6 of her siblings.
Hazel is survived by her son, her brother Karl, her grandchildren (Lezanne, Roger, Christina, Alexandra and Rebecca), her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel's life was a tapestry of resilience, humor, and love. She leaves behind a legacy not only in the generations that follow her, but in the memories and hearts of the many who knew her.
She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
