April 17, 1968 – April 13, 2025
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Mary Grace Smith-Wheaton, who passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, April 13, 2025, surrounded by her family. She faced her illness with strength, grace, and an unwavering optimism that reflected her deep love for life and for her family.
Born in Angeles, Philippines, in 1968, Mary moved to the United States at the age of five with her father, Wesley Foster Smith, who preceded her in death in 2019. Her early years were shaped by the experiences of an Air Force family on the move, living in Guam for many years, where she met her former husband, Michael Wheaton, the father of her three children.
Mary was a devoted mother, nana, aunt, and sister. Mary is lovingly remembered by her three children: James Wheaton and his wife, Carla Rivera, Jessica Wheaton and her husband, Ronnie Simon, and Jonathan Smith and his fiancée, Joleesa Nelson. She was a proud and adoring nana to Aria Smith, Arius Smith, and Leonardo Simon. Mary’s legacy also lives on through her mother, Corazon Smith, her sister, Mary Ann McGuire and Mary Ann’s husband, Timothy McGuire, her nephew, Logan McGuire and her beloved partner of many years, Paul Dias.
Mary called south Florida home since 1994, where she moved with her family to be closer to her parents and sister. For many years, she worked in the hospitality industry as a bartender—a role she embraced with passion, charm, and an open heart. Her vibrant smile and kind spirit left lasting impressions on everyone she met. She formed deep, lifelong friendships with countless patrons and colleagues.
Beyond her professional life, Mary will be remembered for her boundless compassion, her deep love for animals, and the comfort she so freely gave to those in need. Her empathetic nature and infectious laughter made her a light in the lives of so many. Mary found peace and joy in the sound of the ocean waves and soaking in the sun. She cherished family gatherings; always lighting up the room with her charm, and making everyone feel welcome, loved and at home.
Mary’s presence will be dearly missed, but the love she gave and the lives she touched, will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew her.
Mary's services will commence on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 11:00 at the KRAEER-FAIRCHILD FUNERAL HOME, 4061 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale.
It can be a great comfort to a grieving person or family to hear that others thought highly of their loved one, too.
