Victor, lived a century, plus 6 months. He was born Victor Emanual Lyttle in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies on Feb 8, 1922. He was one of two children born to his mother Ethel Maude Finley; his sister died as an infant. He did have two half-brothers, Roy Lyttle and Herbert Lyttle , both now deceased. They moved to Kingston, Jamaica when he was about 5, where he completed all his formal education. Growing up there, his friends called him “Kirkwood” after a wealthy Jamaican, not because he became rich, but because of how he carried himself. He came to America in his twenties and moved to Brooklyn, where he met and married Marjorie Francis, on December 2, 1950. Marjorie was originally from Port-of Spain, Trinidad W.I..
Victor was a proud and strong man, who together with his wife provided for his family to give them the life he felt they deserved. He was not the most affectionate man, but family never questioned his love and commitment to them.
He worked several labor jobs while waiting to become a U.S. citizen. Once he was a citizen he was hired by Con Edison, Public Utilities in NY where he held several positions until he retired at age 58. They moved to Ft. Lauderdale, where he tried his hand at a couple of different ventures fully retiring from businesses in 1985. For recreation, he played cards with his friends and buddies on the weekends, and Domino's at the Jamaican Domino club here in Fort Lauderdale.
Victor was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie Francis (2011) and his first-born son Douglas in 2005. Aside from being “dad” to his children, their close friends and significant others, he is most fondly known as “Grandpa” to his one grandson - Vladimy Lafontant and eight (8) granddaughters: Christina Richards Atkins, Zion Robinson, Bithiah Lafontant, Latia Lyttle, Breanna Espeut, Marissa Lyttle, Kali Harris & River Jackson; and his seven (7 ) great grandchildren: Benjamin Atkins, Jessica Atkins, Michael Lyttle, Lucas Elderbroom, Joah Elderbroom, Johan Powell, & Kennedy Howard. He is lovingly known as “Uncle Vin” to the numerous cousins, too many to list here.
Victor lived a long life. In the last few years with most of his close friends gone and loss of sight, he was still fortunate to have neighbours, friends and family who visited him regularly. Even at the age of 100, he was very witty, had all his senses, and was always ready for a good debate.
Victor will truly be missed by those who knew and loved him.
A visitation for Victor will be held Sunday, October 9, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at 4366 - Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 2401 Southwest 64th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33317, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 PM.
