Ft. Mohave, AZ: Charles (Chuck) P. Hegan, age 97, formerly of Crown Point, IN, surrounded by his life partner, children, and grandchildren, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 21, 2023, after a brief illness. He was born on September 13, 1926, in Chicago, IL to the late Charles and Margaret (Bohr) Hegan. Chuck graduated from Crown Point High School and attended Indiana University where he received his Business degree. He began his long career in business in various financial roles before he stepped into his passion of owning/operating golf courses, which he did for over 60 years. In 1961 he began operating Oak Knoll Golf Course in Crown Point out of a small hut. In later years, he picked up two more courses in Hobart: Indian Ridge and Cressmore. In the early 1970’s, the design and construction of Summertree G.C. in Merrillville began and later opened in 1974. Years later, he acquired his final course, Pheasant Valley, in Crown Point.
Chuck was a giving person and would often quietly help those in need. He was also known to step outside his comfort zone and march to his own drummer where he opened doors in places where they had not been opened before. In addition to being remembered as a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Chuck was a sharp dresser, avid golfer, and card player. When not out on a course mowing fairways or doing other work, he could be found playing a round of golf or sitting at a card table with friends. As a testament to his caring nature, he raised his children with the same passion for hard work and desire to help others on this life journey.
With pages of stories to tell, he will be remembered lovingly by those who survive him, including his life partner, Matzi Kerrinnes; his surviving children Cathy (Jerry) Wilhm, David Hegan, Paul (Vikki) Hegan, and Nancy (Brian) Love; his grandchildren Elyse Moore, Dana Wilhm, Erin Hegan, Andy Hegan, Francisco and Benjamin Love; great-grandchildren Logan and Makayla Moore; and, his brother John Hegan.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Schelfo and son, Shawn Hegan.
While there will not be a funeral service per Chuck’s wishes, a celebration of his life will take place in the late Spring in Crown Point where family and friends will gather to remember him.
A scholarship fund in Chuck’s name will be established at a later date to benefit high school student golfers’ college education.
