Dolores Wells Mistretta, 93, of Fort Myers, passed away Friday, September 12, 2014. She was born in Sumrall, MS on January 17, 1921 to Raymond and Julia Wells. She was married for seventy years to her loving and devoted husband Dick, who survives her. Dolores proudly served in the US Army during WWII as a member of the Women's Army Corps (WAC). She met her husband, who was also serving in the US Army, while stationed in Fort Devens, MA. They were married on January 1, 1944. After WWII, Dolores and Dick lived for nearly thirty-five years in Valley Stream on Long Island, NY. For over twenty-five years Dolores worked for the Valley Stream Department of Education. Dolores devoted herself to raising their two children, Richard and Patti, surrounding them with love and security and installing in them, by her example, a strong commitment to God, family and community. Her sacrifice for and support of her family are enduring examples of a committed wife and mother whose love was unconditional. In 1980, Dolores and Dick moved from Valley Stream to Fort Myers, into the Seven Lakes retirement community. Dolores was an accomplished and award winning artist, specializing in oil painting. She sang in the Seven Lakes choir and loved to dance, work with pottery and play golf. She and Dick traveled extensively, many times spontaneously, and often visited family and friends. Dolores had a ready laugh and a sharp intellect. She was a proud breast cancer survivor. Her unending generosity touched the hearts of family, friends and everyone she met. Dolores joins her four sisters, Mary, Ruth, Lillian, and Helen, in heaven. She is survived by her husband, Richard C. Mistretta; two children: Richard C. (Rochelle) Mistretta, Jr. and Pat (Dr. George Gumann) Mistretta; four grandchildren: Kristen (Jacob) Wilson, Andrew (Kara) Mistretta and Cydney and Stephen Gumann; and four great grandchildren: Jacob and Alexander Wilson and Jude and Joss Mistretta.
A Celebration of Life honoring Dolores will be held Thursday, September 18 at 2 pm, at the Seven Lakes Auditorium in Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dolores' name to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
