It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eula Allen Overby Ballard on February 5, 2025. She was 96 years old. Eula was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
Born on March 10, 1928, in Axtell, North Carolina, Eula was one of six children born to Marvin D. Overby Sr. and Mary Austin Watson. Her family and friends will remember her as a warm and nurturing soul, full of love and compassion for all those she met.
Known as Nannie to her family, she is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Marcile Ballard and Deborah Dawne Hansen (William), both of North Fort Myers, FL. Eula was also blessed with granddaughters Casey Meisse (Chris) and Anna Vogt (Lucas), all of Cape Coral, FL, and great-grandchildren Parker, Olivia, and Charlotte. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Kay T. Overby of Axtell, NC, and brother-in-law Robert Cassell of Cary, NC, as well as many nieces, and a nephew and their families.
Eula was preceded in death by her husband William T. Ballard, her parents, and siblings Elizabeth McAmis (Herbert), Sallie Cole (Russell), Jane Finch (Thomas), Willie B Cassell and Marvin Overby Jr., along with nephew Rusty Cole.
She will also be missed by many dear friends, including Vanessa Sweigart who was like a daughter to Eula, her longtime friend Nancy Baumer, and her faithful caregiver and loving friend Sonya Maylor.
Eula dedicated 45 years of her life to the noble profession of nursing. She began her career at the age of 20 after attending nursing school in Roanoke Rapids, N.C. Throughout her career, she worked in various locations, including Warrenton, NC, Siler City, NC, Venice, FL, and Fort Myers, FL. Her compassionate care touched the lives of hundreds. To honor her career in nursing, the Southwest Florida Nurse Honor Guard will pay tribute to Eula during her service.
A celebration of her life will be held on February 22, 2025, at Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home, located at 9231 Cypress Lake Dr in Fort Myers, FL. The family will receive friends from 10:30AM to 11:00AM, with a memorial celebration beginning at 11:00AM.
Eula will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of kindness, devotion, and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of crossing her path.
