Born in New York in 1935, to Patrick and Loretta Feeney, Jim was a graduate of Bishop Louglin Memorial High School and went on to earn his degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College. He then earned a Master’s degree from New York University.
He began his career with New York Telephone, before joining the United States Navy in 1959. After graduating Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI Jim primarily was stationed at Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. Upon completing his service, he returned to New York Telephone to resume his career.
Jim and his wife Peggy (Dowd) were married in 1965, residing in New York and New Jersey over the next 35 years. They welcomed three children: Peter, Nancy, and Gerard, and raised them on Long Island, NY and in Warren, NJ.
He continued his career throughout the Bell System and AT&T until 1990, when he retired and Peggy returned to her passion of teaching. During this time, Jim took over the responsibilities of running the home, and became quite the cook after a few years. His diligent work and support at home allowed Peggy to pursue two Master’s degrees before she also retired in 2000.
Jim and Peggy retired to Fort Myers, FL in the Legends community. They enjoyed their retirement, and Jim was always ready to help neighbors with mail pickup and other duties when friends would travel. Their retirement was highlighted by travel abroad (and on many cruises) always with a camera nearby to capture their memories. While at home, Jim particularly enjoyed completing the WSJ and NYT Crosswords before anyone else in the house had awoke.
Jim is preceded in death by Peggy (2009) and a daughter Mary. He is survived by his son Peter (Angela); daughter Nancy McGuire (Brian); and son Gerard. He is also survived by his grandson Hayden who brought him his greatest joy as a grandfather.
Funeral Mass will be held at The Church of St. Christopher, 11 Gale Ave, Baldwin, NY on May 15th, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private for the immediate family at a later date.
