Robert “Bob” William Lapp Sr., 78, of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 11, 2025. He grew up in the South Portland community graduating from South Portland High School before continuing his education at the University of Southern Maine, where he earned both his undergraduate degree in History and a master degree in Counseling.
Bob’s athletic gifts were evident early. A talented pitcher, he was scouted by the Baltimore Orioles and—one of his most legendary stories—struck out Ted Williams during his youth in the Cape League. His accomplishments at the University of Southern Maine were later formally recognized in 2014 when he was inducted into the University of Southern Maine Husky Hall of Fame for baseball as part Class of 1969.
Known as a troubleshooter, Bob devoted 45 years to the YMCA across the both Northeast US and Internationally, living the organization’s mission through community leadership, youth development, and a steady belief that people rise when someone chooses to invest in them. His career culminated as CEO of the White Plains, New York YMCA, where his service and mentorship left a deep imprint on colleagues, members, and families. In the communities he served, Bob was known not only for leadership, but for showing up—at events, in conversations, and in the moments when support mattered. Public traces of that community life include his involvement in White Plains civic circles, including the local Rotary community.
In retirement, Bob embraced his passion for golf and was an enthusiastic member of the Lakewood Ranch Country Club, finding joy in friendship, the game, and the simple rhythm of days well lived.
Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara Lapp; his children, Tanya Lapp Iverson and her husband Iver Iverson III, and their sons Iver Iverson IV and Zackary Iverson; Bill Lapp and his wife Julie, and their daughter Addison Lapp; Brogan Lapp and his wife Jordan; and Mallory Lapp. He is also survived by his sister, Debby O’Connell, and her husband Gary.
Bob will be remembered for his devotion to family, his lifelong commitment to lifting others up, and the quiet strength with which he led. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the family he loved deeply.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the Portland, Maine YMCA.
