Born in Peoria, Illinois, Stephen spent much of his life in Central Illinois; places that shaped his values, work ethic, and steady sense of responsibility. In the last five years, he made Fort Myers, Florida his home, where the final chapter of his life unfolded with joy, purpose, and deep connection.
Stephen spent the last two years of his life with the love of his life, Julie McAlinden, sharing days filled with fishing, dancing, time at the beach, game nights with friends, and countless moments of laughter and companionship. Together, they embraced a life rooted in faith, friendship, and joy.
Stephen poured his life into his church and lived his faith through action and encouragement. He was deeply devoted to Riverside Church, serving faithfully on the prayer team, hospitality team, men’s Bible study, and wherever a willing heart was needed. His favorite role was greeting people at the front door on Sunday mornings.
Whether you were a first-time visitor or a lifelong member, young or old, Stephen welcomed you with open arms. He often knelt down to meet children at eye level, offered the warmest handshake, or gave the kind of hug that made you feel instantly known and at home. To Stephen, no one was a stranger, only a friend he hadn’t met yet.
Beyond the church walls, Stephen was an active and caring presence in the Jamaica Bay community. He was always ready to lend a hand, offer encouragement, or quietly help someone in need. His faith flowed naturally into everyday life, expressed through kindness, reliability, and presence.
When Stephen was diagnosed with lung cancer in late 2025, his faith guided every decision. He trusted fully in God’s will, often sharing that if God chose to heal him, he would joyfully remain, loving Julie, serving others, and continuing what he affectionately called the “Riverside Revival.” And if God chose to call him home, Stephen was equally at peace, ready to be with his Savior in Heaven. In life and in death, his hope was secure.
Stephen is survived by his children, Alex and Tamara, and by the many friends, church family, and loved ones whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, January 17, at 1:00 p.m., at Riverside Church, where Stephen so faithfully served and loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Stephen’s life to make a donation in his memory to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, Florida, in gratitude for their compassionate care.
Stephen lived with joy, shared his faith boldly, and welcomed everyone as a friend. He believed in living fully, loving generously, and pointing others to the hope he found in Christ. His life was a celebration, and his legacy lives on in the joy, faith, and love he leaves behind.
