He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served in the Korean Conflict. Following the service, he attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He was employed with the State of Connecticut and worked in the Department of Transportation as a highway inspector.
Dan's infectious smile always radiated happiness and mischief. He loved being active in his younger years and was a man of adventure. He was a gear head and always drove a sports car. He enjoyed skiing and frequented Stowe, Vermont, rode motorcycles in the Enduro racing Circuit and was a private pilot, owning his own plane, which he flew for several years. Many folks love to hear about how he landed a plane on the frozen Lake Pocotopaug, East Hampton, Ct.
In 1972, he met his future wife Susann in East Hampton, Ct. and in 1974 together they sailed his 32-foot Galaxy sloop from Long Island Sound down the eastern seacoast to the Bahama Islands. From then on, they were inseparable. Following that adventure, they relocated to Huntington Beach California where he joined his brother Ken Rand with Rand Robinson INC, an experimental aircraft business. Leaving California, they moved to Vero Beach Florida in 1979 where he worked in the citrus industry for 10 years until he and his business partner, purchased two mobile home parks. For recreation he enjoyed traveling to the Keys and the Bahama Islands aboard his 36-foot Sundeck Trawler, "The Wandering Star". Sharing their love for the sea and adventure, he and Susann became certified scuba divers, diving various sites in the crystal waters of the Caribbean.
They moved into their retirement bungalow in Sebastian, Florida in 2003 where he formed numerous friendships including his sidekick, Bob Edmiston (Debbie). They also had fun times on the many cruises they took in the Caribbean. His favorite cruise was along the Amazon River.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Kenneth Rand, Robert Rosenberg Sr., Lewis Richards and his best friend Bruce Barstow (Susie).
