Mrs. Watterson was born on April 20, 1931 in Christiansburg, VA to Charles Burnett Woolwine and Frances Elizabeth Spangler Woolwine. She was married to A. Douglas Watterson on August 18, 1951 in Bluefield, VA. He admitted that he was instantly smitten after watching her playing on a college girls’ basketball team.
After graduating from Christiansburg High School as Valedictorian in 1948, Mrs. Watterson earned a college degree in English and Religious Education, and taught high school English in Kentucky while her husband completed his graduate studies at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Louisville. During their 68-year marriage, she was his partner and encourager in ministry while raising their three children and enjoying golf, water skiing, piano, and entertaining. Mrs. Watterson was the entire music department at Fellowship Baptist Church in Ettrick, VA, during her husband’s first pastorate. Mrs. Watterson taught Sunday Bible Study and was a soprano in the choirs of the eight churches her husband served as pastor. During her husband’s pastorate at Cliff Temple in Dallas, TX, Mrs. Watterson was Women’s Missionary Union Mission Action Chairperson for the state of Texas.

Following her husband’s death, Mrs. Watterson moved to Gainesville, GA to be closer to family. She became the “social chairman” at Lanier Village Estates, greeting and getting to know all new residents. The residents there thrived on her smile and laughter, and endless stories about her family, including their pets. She was often seen sitting by the bedside of friends during their last days. She was truly a minister to all who knew her.
Mrs. Watterson was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Douglas Wayne Woolwine, who died in infancy on March 28, 1946.
