Born in Perth Amboy, NJ, November 24, 1929. to Amedeo and Immaculata Scala, he entered life just 5 days before the stock market crash of 1929. He married Edith Bogh (2/17/1932 – 3/8/2019) and was predeceased by his devoted wife of 65 years. He is survived by a son, Danny Scala, and a loving daughter and son in law, Sandy and Ivan Peterson.
A child through the great depression he had a strong work ethic. Starting with working for the family business at age 8 pumping gas, and at age 12 driving trucks delivering heating oil, he remained continuously employed throughout his life. He had a 30 career at Twin County Groceries in New Jersey where he was known as The Pallet Man because he recognized the cost of broken pallets to the business and turned an effort to repair pallets into a 25 hour a week effort beyond his regular 40 hour week. A letter from the Twin County Grocers COO stated. “There is no employee in Twin County who is more dedicated and more caring about his work than Lou Scala”. Lou and Edie moved to Spanish Lakes Country Club, Ft. Pierce, in 1984. Lou commuted to New Jersey to work and fully retired in 1986.
Not retired long, he quickly found work at John’s Island in Vero Beach Florida. A real people person, he never knew a stranger, Lou could and did talk to anyone and everyone, and it wasn’t long before his work on the landscaping crew led to him getting to know some John’s Island homeowners. His willingness to help with any job that needed to be done led to a new career as a property manager for several families. He was proud of the fact that even at 95 he was still working.
There will be a Celebration of Life service at Aycock Funeral Home & Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, 6026 US 1, Ft. Pierce, FL. Saturday, February 28 at 11:00am
