Mary Jane Woodley was born in 1919 in Warsaw, New York to Clinton and Florence Woodley. She graduated from Warsaw High School and from Geneseo Normal School (now SUNY Geneseo) with a joint degree in education and library science. She worked for several years as a teacher and librarian in the New York State Public School system. In 1943 she married Richard Skully, whom she had met at Geneseo.
After WWII, Mary and Richard lived in the New York area and then in Rochester, NY. In 1947, Richard, a pilot, began his career with the Civil Aeronautics Administration (now the Federal Aviation Administration). This career involved frequent moves. Starting in Richmond, VA, the family lived in Harrisburg, PA; Hasbrouck Heights, NJ; Nassau County, NY; Montgomery, AL; Fairfax County, VA; Oklahoma City, OK; Miami, FL; and, again, in Fairfax County, VA. When they retired they moved to Coral Gables, FL, where she was active in the management of volunteers at the South Miami Hospital.
Hurricane Andrew was an inducement for Mary Jane and Richard to relocate to Jupiter, FL in 1993. In late 2002, they moved to the ACTS community in Vero Beach to join Mary Jane’s older and younger sisters, Margaret and Joan.
Mary’s immediate survivors are her sister, Joan, and her sons, Michael and David.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers and the like, that donations be directed to the VNA of Vero Beach (which provided hospice care for both Richard and Mary) or to the ACTS community – support for activities for the residents of Willowbrook Court (monetary or in-kind) would be particularly appropriate.
