POITRAS (nee Cappo) – Alvina 'Chigal' Poitras passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on the Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation. Ka Mesit Peyasu Iskwew Ka Poni Kimowak (Beautiful Thunderbird Woman After The Rain) began her journey to the Spirit World on January 24, 2018 at age 84.
Alvina was predeceased by her paternal grandparents: Eulalie (Paskimin) and Patrick Cappo; maternal grandparents: Katherine (McKay) and Solomon Toto; Parents Edna and John Cappo, sister Mary Sugar, her son Lionel James, daughter Heather Lynn, granddaughter Polly Lane and nephew Lonnie Dean.
Chigal is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Stanley Sr., their children: Brenda, Marmie (Joe), Stanley Jr. 'Fella' (Lee-ann) and adopted children: Jim Pratt, Ian Morris, and Angie Merasty; Grandchildren: Jaime (Tony), Krista (Farryl), Laura (Rob), J.J., Jordan, Taylor (Isaiah), Trent, Tara, Jessy, Rene (Dallas), Marissa (Matt), Chelsea, Trey (Kristen), and Little Fella; 16 great grandchildren; her close relatives from the Cappo, Sugar, Toto and Poitras families, her many godchildren, nieces and nephews.
Alvina’s greatest gifts were making starquilts, sewing, home cooked meals, picking wild berries and her teachings of love, respect and kindness which she shared with family and community so generously.
The funeral service will be held in Piapot Community Hall on Monday, January 29, 2018 commencing at 11:00 a.m. A wake will be held Sunday, January 28, 2018 in the community hall starting at 3:00 p.m. By request of the family, please no children under 12 years of age in attendance.
The family would like to thank the nurses and Dr. Hassantha of All Nation's Healing Hospital, nurses and Dr. McLeod of the Pasqua Hospital and FHQTC Home Care team for the care given to Alvina. Special thanks to Yvonne Bigknife and family, Harry Francis and Art Francis for their support and guidance.
