I have fond memories of Uncle Henry....the first coming to mind was that I tagged him as "the ice cream Uncle"....he enjoyed a big bowl and I looked forward to him always dishing some up for me as well.  

He was very intelligent and well read man for his generation.  Mechanically inclined and creative....especially in his little manufacturing shop....some of our friends have one his Christmas stars still in use.

As a teenager, I enjoyed staying with Aunt Johanna & Uncle Henry in the winter so I could attend school when our farm roads were snow bound. 

Our condolences to Roland & Darlene, Clinton & Nikki and their extended families.  I am unable to attend the funeral due to work committments, but do hope to make another trip out to Sask in the not too distant future.

Memories: Our farm wasn't that far from Uncle Henry's farm. Earliest memories are Uncle Henry as a single man popping in to see us. As he pulled up to the house I'd marvel at his International Harvester pickup truck. It always looked like it had just come out of the box. That was very unusual back when all the roads were either dry dirt or mud. And later, he was one of the first to have the purple lights mounted inside the windshield in the two top corners. Wow! Kids today would say, "cool!".
When my dad took me to his farmhouse I was impressed at how a bachelor could keep his place so tidy. He even had his table set for his next meal. But what I found amusing as a kid was that his cup, saucer & plate were turned upside down. He said it was because the windows weren't that tight & that kept the farm dust off them.

The living room was another attraction for a curious kid. Plastered all over the walls were mementos of his driving holidays. Most of them were in the form of the small felt pennants we used to see. To a kid like me, he was a world traveler.

In those days he was also quite the hunter. My dad wasn't, so those trophy antlers and pictures of ducks & geese were an inspiration for me to do some hunting, as I grew older.
I still have the duck & goose gun that my father had purchased as a teenager & then loaned to Uncle Henry. It weighs a ton by today's standards, but the full choke 36" barrel
are still very impressive today.

Uncle Henry was quite a kidder in his younger days. You never knew when to take him serious. When he married Aunt Johanna she was too. I remember once asking her how they ever managed to communicate if neither knew what to believe to be serious.

He was also quite handy with the tools. I'd watch him in his shop on the farm. He was the first to tell me about patents & how he hoped to strike it rich if one of his creations caught on. He even increased the horsepower on his tractor. That puppy could haul. When I was a teenager I once got a job cultivating on his North East quarter section. My parents were opposed to me tackling those hills. I assured them that I'd keep my foot on the clutch if the front wheels lifted too much; and if I just lost steerage I could still steer with his individual rear wheel brakes. 

After I left home & he and Aunt Johanna moved to Lipton to raise their family he started his manufacturing business. While he never struck it rich with one of his inventions, I felt that in a small way he had realized his dream. Each year we still display one of his Christmas stars on the very top of our house.

Our condolences go out to Clinton & Nikki, Roland & Darlene, and their now extended families.
Heather & I are overdue for a trip back to Sask. Perhaps some time when there won't be a problem with plane connections as people prepare for their own Thanks Giving family get-to-ethers. Perhaps then we can spend some quality time together.
