Norma Garratt

Norma was born October 14, 1931 to her parents Hazel and Frank on her grandparents’ farm at Ardill, SK. She took her schooling in Limerick and then moved to Regina for a business course. She worked at Toronto General Trust before getting married to Bert Garratt in May 1956. They made their home in Abernethy in 1960 where Bert had begun his farming career. They moved back and forth between Moose Jaw, Regina and Abernethy due to Bert’s work with the Department of Agriculture, until they settled in Abernethy in 1966. Norma worked at the Abernethy Credit Union from the mid-1970s until 1983, when she retired to become a full-time grandma.

Norma was dedicated to her local community and was an active member of many organizations. She received an Honorary Life Membership in the Abernethy Agricultural Society. She was actively involved in the annual Abernethy Fair on numerous committees as well as a fierce competitor in the Inside Exhibits for decades.

She was prompter and supper committee member for the annual Abernethy Supper Theatre for many years. Norma was also a member of: Housing Authority, Abernethy Knox United Church Board, Abernethy UCW, Donor’s Choice, Eastern Star, Abernethy Seniors’, Recreation Board and local co-correspondent for Melville Advance/Fort Times newspapers. Amongst all her duties in the community, she always made time for her three grandchildren. They spent immeasurable time at Granny Garratt’s, as did many of the neighborhood kids.

Norma was predeceased by her parents Hazel and Frank and her husband Bert.

She is survived by her brother Bob Reynolds (Donna); her two children Judy Legaarden and Bill Garratt (Nancy); three grandchildren: Ross Legaarden (Anela Jakupovic), Megan Garratt (Sterling Smith) and John Garratt (Sydney Durand); great-granddaughter Helena Garratt; brother-in-law Gordon Garratt (Lorraine) and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private interment will be held at a later date.
