He grew up on a farm in Uncas, Alberta, where he developed a strong work ethic, a deep love for the land, and animals that would shape his life. Roy had a special bond with horses, which led him to become a skilled horse trainer and rodeo champion.
In his mid-twenties, Roy returned to school as an adult student and earned a BComm from the University of Alberta. After graduating, Roy joined the University of Alberta’s staff, where he dedicated over three decades to his work before retiring, returning to his cowboy roots and embracing team cattle penning with the same passion and dedication he had for rodeoing, all while forming valued friendships along the way.
Roy is survived by his first wife, Greta, and their three children: Brian (Shelley), Brenda, and Bruce. He is also lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Vanessa (Terry), Jessica (Francisco), Ryan (Ashley), and Brandon (Lexie), along with his eight great-grandchildren.
Roy was predeceased by his second wife, Bonnie. Through their union, he became a part of her family, welcoming her two sons, Kelly and Darcy, as well as her sisters and their families into his life.
As his children fondly recall, Sunday mornings growing up were filled with Dad cooking a tasty breakfast and making a horrible mess, while Johnny Cash or Hank Williams played loudly in the background. Roy’s love for music, rodeo, and living life on his own terms shaped the man he was—genuine, strong, and fiercely independent.
Roy will be deeply missed by all who knew him, especially his family, who were always his greatest pride. His legacy of hard work, integrity, and unwavering love will live on.
A celebration of Roy’s life will be held on May 31, 2025 between 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM at 26208 Township Road 511, Spruce Grove, AB T7Y 1B8.
