He was born July 2, 1939, in Sanford, FL to M.D. and Thelma Brown. Doug graduated from DeLand, FL High School in 1957. He served two years in the U.S. Army in the band at West Point. In 1979, Doug received a PhD from Memphis State University specializing in child and neuropsychology. He worked in Little Rock and later moved to Ft. Smith, where he opened his own practice. He retired in 2005.
Doug served with the Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster and received the Silver Beaver and the St. George Awards. He was a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was an active member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Barling for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Doug Jr. and wife Kitt and their children: Riley, Garrett, and Katie of Greenville, NC; daughter, Kathy and husband Adam Ellis and their children: Samantha, Gabe, Grace, and Zachary of Maumelle, AR; brother, Grady and wife Terri of Cocoa, FL; and seven nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018, from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Rosary to follow at 7:00 PM both at Edward's Funeral Home in Fort Smith. AR. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 8, 2018, at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Barling, AR. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery on Fort Chaffee, AR.
