One of my favorite memories of John is a fleeting one, understated, funny, and smart like the man himself. We were at a family gathering of some sort, and someone made a comment or asked a question to which John gave a response that was subtly double-edged and humorous. Its double-meaning seemed to be missed by the rest of the gang, but he gave me a sly sideways glance, with a slightly raised eyebrow and hint of a knowing smile that bound us together in that shared, funny moment. Nothing else needed to be said. 

I met John only a decade ago. I knew him mainly in the reflective light of the great love in which his children and grandchildren held him. The warmth and respect with which they surrounded him made plain to me what a good man he was. I feel lucky to have known him and to have his example to follow.


John was and always will be special to me and my family.  When my husband first went to work for Schlumberger in Wichita Falls, Texas, it was John who trained him.    Throughout his career, my husband could always rely on advice from John.

Wichita Falls, San Angelo, Anchorage - many fond memories over the years.  John and his family were just fun to be around!

What a pleasure it was to know John.  He was such a gracious and lovely man.  In 2011, I had the privilege of having John, Gloria, Kim, and Jamie on one of my photo tours.  We traveled through Florence, Tuscany, and Venice.  John's knowledge of photography was amazing but also his knowledge of history, science, and the arts was a treat.  Months later I got to see John's program about the trip at a local camera club.  What a joy to see his perfect photos combined with his great speaking skills.

I will miss him.  My love to all the family.
