Dolores M. Smith

Dolores (“Doie”) Moyer Smith, age 93, of Libertyville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2021 at the JourneyCare Pepper Family Hospice Care Center in Barrington, Illinois. Doie was born in Decatur, Indiana on August 27, 1928 to Max and Gertrude (Altman) Moyer. She grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana and graduated from Fort Wayne South Side High School. On July 18, 1950, she married Robert W. Smith, Jr., and they were married for 64 happy years until his death in 2015. In addition to her husband, Doie was preceded in death by her six siblings, Minnie Sapirie, Jack Moyer and Herman Moyer of Fort Wayne; Harry Moyer of Lima, Ohio; Rose Rothberg of Beverly Hills, California; and Frances Levy Mark of Boynton Beach, Florida.

For many years Doie was the sportwear buyer for Fishman’s, an exclusive women’s specialty store in Fort Wayne. She left the retail fashion industry to raise her family. When her children started college, she embarked on a second career at Walker Information, first as an interviewer—winning the company’s Founder’s Award as Interviewer of the Year—and later as a receptionist. The center of Doie’s life, however, was her family, and her greatest source of joy was making other people happy. She was a truly selfless person who made everyone around her feel welcome and valued. Doie’s kind spirit will remain forever in the hearts of those she touched and loved.

After living most of her life in Fort Wayne, Doie moved to Libertyville in 2017 to be closer to family. She leaves to cherish her memory her three children, Gayle L. Skolnik (Bradley) of Indianapolis, Robert W. Smith, III (Susan) of Libertyville, and Thomas C. Smith (Sara Slaughter) of Chicago; her six grandchildren, Adam Skolnik (Alexys), Matthew Skolnik (Lindsey Mohney), Robert W. Smith IV, Nicole Smith (fiancé Steven Dutton), Ben R. Smith and Samuel R. Smith; her great grandson, Lukas Robert Skolnik; and many cherished nieces and nephews. Doie’s family would like to thank all her caregivers for their loving attention and care for Doie in her final months, particularly Cindy Tapia and Stacy Simerly.

A private family service and interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Fort Wayne. Memorial contributions may be made to JourneyCare Hospice at journeycare.org/donate.
