George Meyer, 71, went to be with his "Mommy and Daddy Meyer" and his Lord, Wednesday July 30, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana surrounded by his family. George was born in Evansville, Indiana on April 22, 1954 to Arthur and Alvina Meyer. He joined two sisters, Helen and Sara, and eventually a brother Philip was born.
In his early years he lived on the family farm in rural Gibson County outside Fort Branch. The family attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Fort Branch. George attended the Marian Day School in Evansville where the good Sisters helped teach him to read, write, count, and tell time. Eventually, George entered the workforce working at Gibson County ARC in Princeton. In the early 80's, George and his parents moved to rural Allen County outside of Fort Wayne to be near his sisters, who had both settled there, and his nephews and niece. In the late 80's, the family moved back home to Gibson County and settled in the town of Haubstadt. Being new to "town life" after only living in rural settings, George quickly adapted and he began walking throughout the town daily. He had free reign of the West side of town but would never cross the railroad tracks. He began picking up aluminum cans on his walks and gained the nickname "the can man." He enjoyed watching baseball games at the park and talking to everyone. He was welcomed by many people and children in Haubstadt and was known to just walk into people's yards, garages, and homes unannounced, but was always welcomed. In 2004, after his mother became ill, George went to live with his sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Robert Trahin, in rural Fort Wayne. He quickly made friends with their friends and all of his nephews and nieces friends. He returned to work at Easter Seals ARC in Fort Wayne where he faithfully worked until just a few months before his death. Although he regularly attended Mass with his family at Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Fort Wayne or Saint Patrick Catholic Church in Arcola, he was still a registered member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, Indiana. He was also a life member of the Saints Peter and Paul Knights of Columbus Council.
George was a very loving, caring, joyful, and inquisitive person. He would always want to know what everyone was doing, where they were doing it, what vehicle they drove, how and when they were getting home, and, most importantly, when will things get "back to normal." He very much enjoyed visiting friends and family, especially his annual trip to Haubstadt to see his many family members and friends during the town's annual Sommerfest, most especially Father Anthony "Tony" Ernst and his longtime neighbors "Roger Roger" and "Kimmy" Elpers. He enjoyed spending time in his brother-in-law's barn, playing records, playing cards and marbles, and eating anything he could get ahold of. There was never a banana or cookie that stood a chance if George spotted them! He especially loved playing with his beloved doggie Ronnie, or any other dog he could. He also looked forward to watching his great nieces and great nephew playing sports, where he would always get popcorn. In 2024, George was honored by the birth of his newest great niece who was named Georgia, after him.
George began experiencing health issues this spring, leading to time in and out of the hospital, until reluctantly the family made the decision leading to his placement at Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne, for a few weeks before he was moved back to Parkview where he died. George was privileged to live his whole life with his family.
He is survived by his sisters, Helen (Robert) Trahin of Huntertown, Indiana and Sara (Greg) Wissler of Fishers, Indiana; nephew, Trebor Trahin of Arcola, Indiana; niece, Angie "Star" (Troy) Smith of Woodburn, Indiana; nephew, Paul Trahin of Fishers; nephew, Mark Trahin of Huntertown; and nephew, Jacob (Emily) Trahin of Fort Wayne; three great nieces, McKenna Smith, Maggie Smith, and Georgia Trahin; one great nephew, Cooper Smith; and many cousins, friends, and his beloved doggie, Ronnie. George was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur F. and Alvina C. (Market) Meyer; and brother, Philip.
