John L. Dahman, a beloved and compassionate individual, passed away on September 29, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on January 4, 1948, John was known for his devoted, hard-working, and kind-hearted nature. He graduated from South Side High School in 1967 and promptly joined the Navy, where he served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War on the USS Halsey CG-23; he was a Gunner 1st Class. After his military service, John retired from I&M following 34 years of dedicated service.
John was married to his cherished wife, Merrilee, for 42 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evaleen (Reed) Dahman; his father, Lester Dahman; his brother, Louis (Sonny) Levine; and his sister, Leona (Levine) Woodruff. He is survived by his loving wife, Merrilee Dahman; his brother, Patrick (Diane) Dahman; his daughters, Kathryn Clark, Michelle (Steve) Ball, Tara Dahman, Lizabeth (Rob) Halsey, and Lisa Watson; and his sons, Jeff (Ixchel) Watson and John (Alicia) Watson. He also leaves behind grandsons Jordan Shafer, Joshua (Caitlan) Ehinger, Joseph (Brandy) Dahman-Ball, Alex (Kat) Halsey, James (Nicole) Ball, Riley Bilby, Alex Landry, and Brendan Watson, as well as great-granddaughters Ezra Ball and Aurora Ball. His beloved dog, Maggie, will also miss him dearly.
John enjoyed a rich life filled with personal interests and community involvement. He had a passion for golf, often describing his game as ho-hum, and he took great pleasure in walking his dogs. He was deeply involved in his community, belonging to the local VFW 857 where he held the post of State Commander from 1991 to 1992. He was also a lifetime member of both the American Legion and Amvets. He was honored in 1991 with the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Evan Bayh.
Known for his humorous and generous spirit, John was a friend to all and loved by more people than can be named. His memory will be forever cherished in the hearts of those who knew him.
