LAVON W. SNYDER, died peacefully Monday, May 23, 2016. He was born on April 24, 1927. He enlisted during the World War II at the age of 17. He toured the Philippines and was a member of the Quarter masters graves registration platoon and endured there what we can only imagine as a daily nightmare picking up our fallen dead. He went home and married his sweetheart, "our mother", who he met at Eddie's Donut Shop. He also remained in the reserves for many years. He worked on the Nickel Plate railroad on the 765 as a fireman as well. He sacrificed his days working 100+ hours a week sometimes for his family. He retired after 30+ years from Hall's Restaurants Bakery. He worked as a baking instructor at Ivy Tech for 15 years before he retired again. He did a brief stint opening Eddie Merlots restaurant until falling down the stairs and breaking a few ribs ended that venture. He was a die hard Cubs fan, a cook without comparison, and a loving compassionate father. His green thumb for working in the garden was also without measure. He sacrificed his time for our country, he dedicated his time for his children. "We are proud and honor his 89 years of achievements. His countless times he gave to us all are immeasurable. There are many broken hearts today. Our hearts are broken, but one of God's Children has returned to him. I rejoice in his arrival to the kingdom of heaven." Surviving are his sister, Bernadine Robbins; children, Marilyn Graf, David, (Susan) Snyder, Lavon, (Betty) Snyder, Kathy, (Kevin) Clark, Kelly Crays, Mark, (Ellen) Snyder, and George (Sheryl) Snyder. With a special thanks to Lisa Jerrall for her dedication and love. Lavon is also survived by 30+ grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn June Snyder, in 2012. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday at C.M. Sloan & Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells St., Fort. Wayne, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorials to Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana. www.sloanandsonsfuneralhome.com God our father, Your power brings us to birth, Your providence guides our lives, And by Your command we return to dust. Lord, those who die still live in Your presence, Their lives change but do not end. I pray in hope for family, Relatives and friends, And for all the dead known to You alone. In company with Christ, Who died and now lives, May they rejoice in Your kingdom, Where all our tears are wiped away. Unite us together again in one family, To sing Your praise forever and ever. Amen
