Mary Alice Newton

Mary Alice Newton, age 103, died on October 7, 2022 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Formerly of Evansville, Indiana, she lived in Fort Wayne since 2014.
Mary was a member of St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, and St Elizabeth Seton, Fort Wayne. She attended Lockyear Business College and worked as a secretary for Superior Oil Company before becoming a homemaker. Mary acquired her pilot’s license in 1946, and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. She lovingly cared for her husband who suffered from early onset Alzheimer’s for 17 years.
Mary is survived by daughters, Linda Newton Dennis of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Mary Pat (Dr. Gregory) Veerkamp of Fort Wayne; grandsons, Greg (Lacey) Dennis, Eric Dennis, Patrick (Jade) Veerkamp and Daniel Veerkamp (fiancée Becky Gibbs); and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Bender Newton, in 1993, and daughter Cecelia Newton in 2020.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton Church at 11 a.m. Monday on Monday, October 10, 2022, with calling at 10 a.m. A Graveside Service will be 10 am Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Bender Cemetery, Spencer County, Indiana. Arrangements by D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in kher honor may be made to St. Benedict Cathedral, Evansville, the Alzheimer’s Association, 701 N. Weinbach Ave., Evansville, IN 47711, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, or to Stillwater Hospice, Fort Wayne.
