Rev. Sam Shade, Jr., a devoted servant of God, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pastor, and friend, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on April 12, 2026, at the age of 102. He was born on February 16, 1924, in Boligee, Alabama. In his early twenties, he relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he would go on to build not only a life, but a lasting legacy. Shortly after arriving, he prayed for and was blessed to meet the woman God had prepared for him, Arthella Jones Shade. Together, they built a strong, faith-centered marriage and had eight children, instilling in them a deep love for the Lord and a commitment to living lives that reflect His word.
Rev. Shade accepted his call to ministry in 1957 and was ordained in 1958. He furthered his studies at Fort Wayne Bible College and earned a diploma in Christian Theology from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was also recognized with an Honorary Degree - Doctorate of Humanities by Cornerstone Christian Bible College International. Prior to his years of pastoral leadership, he worked at International Harvester for more than 30 years before retiring. There, he demonstrated the same dedication and strong work ethic that would later define his ministry.
In 1975, Rev. Shade became pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, where he served with distinction for nearly 40 years. Under his leadership, the church experienced tremendous growth. Hundreds were baptized, united in marriage, and countless individuals were counseled and encouraged through his wisdom in Christ. A visionary leader, Rev. Shade was instrumental in advancing the growth of the church. Through favor and disciplined leadership, he successfully guided the church to pay off a 30-year mortgage in nearly half the time. Rev. Shade’s influence extended beyond the church walls. His vision for Pilgrim Baptist Church prioritized not only spiritual growth but also community service and outreach, often saying, “Follow me as I follow Christ.”
While many knew him as a pastor, those closest to him knew him as a man who truly enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He loved tending to his garden, working with his hands, and finding value in everything, even in what others might overlook. He was always tinkering with old radios and televisions, problem-solving, and making something out of nothing.
He never met a stranger. Anywhere in the community, he would stop, talk, and connect. People rarely left his presence without hearing about his Father and the goodness of God.
At home, he cherished quiet moments with his wife and enjoyed watching sports, game shows, and in his later days, virtual worship services. He would often lie in bed at night listening to gospel music (on full blast), was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, and a gifted storyteller who brought joy and laughter to every family gathering.
He loved talking on the phone with friends and family, staying connected in faith and fellowship. No matter the setting, he always gave God the glory, often ending conversations with, “God did it” and “I’m better than blessed.”
Above all, he was a loving husband and the heart of his family. His legacy lives on.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Shade Sr. and Alberta Cade Shade; brothers, Joe Shade Sr. and Andrew Shade Sr.; sisters, Leona Byrd, Willie D. O’Neal, Eliza S. Cotton, Roberta Evans, and Lucy Todd; and infant granddaughter, Sienna Shade.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Arthella Shade; their eight children: Joan Shade Lewis, Sam (Terri) Shade III, Patricia (Keith) Marshall, Judy (James) Scott, Gregory (Shelly) Shade, Margie (Keith) Nelson, Patrice (Ron) Nelson, and Shalon Shade; his sister, Georgia Mack; along with a host of grandchildren: Brea Sanchez, Ryan (April) Lewis, Dante Marshall, Ashley (Carl) Martin, Brittney “Old Grouch” Marshall, Candace Nelson, Tyler Scott, Corey (Katie) Nelson, Kyle Nelson, Evan Shade, Donavon Nelson, Chloe Shade, Wesley Nelson, and Colton Shade; and great-grandchildren: Abriana House, Aiden Mason, Andres Hayes, Creaden Nelson, Ayla Mason, Amari Martin, Jelani Martin, and Arlo Nelson. All will continue to carry his love and legacy forward.
Until we meet again, we celebrate his life.
With love and gratitude,
The Family of Rev. Sam Shade, Jr.
