Scott was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Lawrence and Hazel Kamphues on November 18, 1923. He graduated from Central High School and worked at GE, before enlisting in the US Navy in 1942 during World War II, serving until 1946. He married his sweetheart, Opal Banning, on April 19, 1947. She passed away in 2006, after 59 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter, Marilynn; infant son, Rickey; sisters, Hazel “Toots” (Joe) Laier and Mary Wolf; and grandson-in-law, Jody Rudolph.
Scott grew up in a family of butchers and worked at Guy Laurents’ Packing house for 10 years after his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy. He then had the opportunity to become a letter carrier for the USPS, which he happily did for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Scott was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and was a Benefactor Life Member of the NRA. He loved golfing and walking, and in his later years, enjoyed sitting and relaxing on his porch swing.
He will be truly missed by his daughter, Candy (Douglas Sr.) Wellman; grandsons, Douglas (Morgan) Wellman Jr., Scott Wellman, Matt (Linsay) Wellman; granddaughters, Heidi (Jody) Rudolph and Holly (Ian) Webb; a niece, Karen Sands; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service 11:00 am Monday, February 24, 2025, at D.O. McComb and Sons Funeral Homes - Lakeside Park, 1140 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation one hour prior. Committal and Burial at Odd Fellows (IOOF) Cemetery, New Haven, IN.
