Sue Ann Slane (née Schible), 85 years old, of Ft Wayne, IN, passed away Sunday March 27, 2022 after a short illness; surrounded by her beloved family. Born and raised in Fort Wayne, Sue graduated from Central Catholic High school in 1954. She went on to get her degree in Medical Coding. Sue married her high school sweetheart John (Jack) Slane April 7, 1955.
Sue was hired by St. Joseph Hospital in 1954, and her career spanned 62 years with the majority of it working at the hospital. She was very proud to work for St. Joe and loved telling the story of how her job was supposed to be temporary. She was featured in numerous commercials for “St. Joe” over the years and was celebrated at a gala event shortly before her retirement.
A lifelong resident of Fort Wayne, Sue prided herself on knowing stories about the people and times of this city. Her life encompassed the Great Depression, WWII, the presidencies of FDR-Joe Biden, the advent of television, the internet, cellular phones and so much more. She loved her hometown, and never wanted to live anywhere else. Progressive for the times, Sue and Jack adopted three racially diverse children in the 1960’s when such a thing was very uncommon. Politically ambiguous for most of her life, she leaned heavily into Democratic causes in recent years. She was also very supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, of which she had several members in her family. She remained a devout catholic her entire life.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband, John (Jack) Slane; her parents, William and Gertrude Schible; her sisters, Sandra Amundson, and Sharon Dunn; and her nephew, Mark Fox. She is survived by her children, Daniel Slane of Fort Wayne, IN, Molly Wright of Phoenix, AZ, and Julie Reinking of Ft Wayne, IN; her grandchildren, Jacob Slane, Elizabeth (Jack) Kinsey, Brittany (Jon) Galbreath, Brandon DeWitt, Nicholas Reinking, Alec (Zak) Roane, Bianca DeWitt; and six great-grandchildren; along with her brother, Tom (Karen) Schible, her brothers-in-law, and her many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4500 Fairfield Ave, Fort Wayne, IN, with calling one hour prior. Visitation will also take place from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, April 8, 2022, at D.O. McComb and sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave, Fort Wayne.
