Gene graduated from Central High School in 1955 and upon graduation he joined the United States Navy and proudly served until 1959. He started his career at Kunkle Valve in 1959 through 1995 and retired from Shambam on March 1, 2002.
You could always find him on the sidelines of an athletic event, a school function, or any extracurricular activity – especially dance competitions, where he became something of a legend – cheering on his grandchildren and the many “adopted” ones he treated as his own. He loved his weekly trips to the casinos with his sisters every Tuesday and cherished playing cards with family. And no week was complete without breakfast at Richard’s Restaurant: the breakfast special – eggs over easy, bacon crisp, white toast with strawberry jelly, “if you have it.” He wasn’t just present for the big moments – he was a constant, beloved part of our everyday lives.
Gene is survived by his children, Vicki Magley of Fort Wayne, IN, Rick (Karen) DeCamp of Pennsylvania, and Michael (Michelle) DeCamp of New Haven, IN; sisters, Beverly DeCamp of Fort Wayne, IN and Patia Ashley of New Haven, IN; grandsons, Tyler DeCamp, Bryce DeCamp, and Derick (Clare) DeCamp; and favorite granddaughter, Lindsey DeCamp.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; a grandson, Joshua Ryan Magley; his parents; and sisters, Donna Birkenbeul and Ruth Morton.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am Wednesday July 2, 2025, at D.O. McComb and Sons, Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., Fort Wayne, IN, with visitation one hour prior.
