Born on December 10, 1943, in Acushnet, Massachusetts, he was the son of Odell and Mary Bruton. Butch was a devoted husband, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and a loyal friend to many. He was a man known for his steady presence, kind heart, and the way he made people feel seen and valued. To those who knew him, he was not only a role model, but someone whose words and actions carried lasting meaning.
Butch's greatest joy was his family as well as his time as a rodeo announcer. His familiar voice echoed across arenas for the North Texas High School Rodeo Association, UPRA shows, AJRA, 21 and Under events, and the Texas Youth Bull Riding Rodeos. He was also proud to announce for the American Paint Horse Association and other equine world shows when requested. His closing words became unforgettable to many:
"Happy trails until we meet again I will see you down the road"
Those words now serve as a heartfelt farewell to the man who spoke them with sincerity and warmth.
Before retirement, Butch played softball for Texas Electric's men's and coed teams as well as First Baptist Church. He dedicated many years to coaching his children's baseball and select fastpitch softball teams. He served as President of the Crowley Girls Youth Association, and coached all age divisions through Crowley, Burleson, and Everman girls softball and boys baseball leagues during his daughters' and son's playing years.
His influence extended across Texas, where he coached and mentored many young athletes who played on his teams, teaching them not only the game, but discipline, teamwork, and confidence. Papa (Butch) also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in many rodeo, sporting events, and artistic activities.
Professionally, Butch retired after 31 years from TXU where he worked in the rights-of-way department handling contracts, bringing the same integrity and work ethic to his career as he did to every aspect of his life.
He will be remembered for his leadership, generosity, and the unwavering love he gave to his family and community. His voice, guidance, and example will continue to live on in the countless lives he touched.
Butch Bruton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nita Bruton, his children; Keli Bruton, Staci (Shane) Shewmake, Mark (Dakota) Bruton, grandchildren; Chris (fiancee, Kaylee) Bruton, Casey (Trey) Enterline, Braden (Emily) Shewmake, Haley Shewmake, Rilee Bruton, Tanner Bruton, Ryker Bruton, great-grandchildren; Chandler Bruton, Scarlett Bruton, Micah Shewmake, Brooks Enterline, and Crew Shewmake. He is also survived by his brother, Vernon (Toni) Bruton.
Happy trails, Butch. Until we meet again—see you down the road.
