Fort Worth. Jack was born in Wichita Falls, TX on September 17, 1942. He attended Wichita
Falls High School and graduated in 1961 and went on to attend Midwestern State University.
Jack married his lifelong love, Paula Royce Smith, on July 28, 1962 and they enjoyed 24 years
of marriage together.
Jack worked in the Telecommunications business for over 30 years, covering a sales territory
that included large portions of Central and Southeast Texas. His career took him on many Texas
backroads, and his family joked that he knew “every road in Texas” as they never saw him use a
map. Jack became a Master Mason in Andrews, Texas in 1975. He went on to become a
Shriner and was a member of the El Maida Temple of El Paso and the Moslah Temple of Fort
Worth.
Jack was a lover of all things history. He enjoyed sports, especially high school football,
anything related to Texas and the Southwest, and listening to rhythm & blues, country, and
Motown music. Jack loved the game of golf, both as a player and a spectator. He enjoyed
attending both the Byron Nelson and Colonial PGA tournaments, in addition to being a member
of Waterwood National in Huntsville, TX and Star Hollow Golf Club in Tolar, TX. In 1975, he shot
a hole-in-one at the Shangri La Golf Club in Afton, OK. Like many avid golfers, his time spent on
the course was both a source of great enjoyment and enduring frustration. His family was
important to him, and he loved to share one of his favorite activities, boating on Lake Granbury,
with his children. Jack appreciated a good laugh and often could be found watching game
shows or comedy, particularly satires like The Three Stooges and Spongebob Squarepants,
much to his granddaughters’ amusement. After suffering a stroke in 2003, Jack lived a simple
and private life, sharing it with those closest to him.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Jack Nunnelley Holmes and Peggy Mozelle Spruiell.
He is survived by his loving family, his former wife, Paula Royce Smith Holmes of Fort Worth,
and their children, Christi (Scott) Holmes Walker of Cypress and Samuel Hunter Holmes of Fort
Worth, his granddaughters, Rachel (Garrett) Walker of Houston, Rebecca Walker of Dallas,
Reghan Walker of Kirkland, WA, and Meghan Holmes of Lewisville, his sister Carmen Holmes
Baker (Richard) of Fort Worth, and nephews Sean and Scott Bloodgood of Fort Worth.
