

James “Jim” Sumner, 63, of Burleson, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 12th, 2023, surrounded by his family after a long battle with cirrhosis and other health issues. He was born in Scottsboro, Alabama, to Vernon Eugene Sumner and Betty Joyce (Judge) Moore, on August 16th, 1960. He grew up in Alabama with his brother Charles, until the family relocated to Texas. He attended Sam Houston High School in Arlington, Texas where he developed lifelong friendships.
James worked to get his Journeyman license and became an Electrician by trade. He was a proud member of IBEW Local #20. He married Rene’ Shannon in August of 1980 and they were married for 21 years during which time they had 3 daughters: Jamie Rene’, Jessica Claire and Jordan Allie.
James loved deer hunting, tinkering in the garage, working on cars and talking cars with his buddies. He was an avid Harley rider. Later in life, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a self-proclaimed “singer” and for the majority of his life, convinced his daughters that he wrote the song “Hey, Good Lookin”. Much to their surprise, it was actually written and sang by Hank Williams.
He is survived by his sweetheart and best friend, Carole Nobbe and her son Austin; children: Jamie (Daniel) Price of Crowley, TX, Jessica Trick of Granbury, TX, and Jordan Sumner of Burleson, TX; grandchildren: Landon and Mason Price; Jasey, Jacqueline and Juliet Trick; Tinslee and Adelynn Nobbe; brother: Charles Sumner; his Aunt Liz (Harvey) Johnson as well as numerous beloved cousins, niece, great-nieces, great-nephew, and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Moore; his father, Vernon Sumner; his uncle, James “Jimmy” Judge, and his aunt, Nell McKee.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a visitation/memorial, which will be held at Laurel Land Funeral Home on Monday October 16th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Per his wishes, he will be cremated, and his daughters will plan a special ashes spreading ceremony at a later date.
