Joe David Smith

Born on May 14, 1943, in Shelby County, Texas, J.D. came from humble beginnings and spent his life building something of his own through hard work, determination, and perseverance. He was the founder of Smith Drywall I, Ltd., which he established in 1983. Through decades of dedication to the commercial construction industry, specializing in drywall, cold metal framing, and acoustical ceilings, J.D. earned a reputation as a skilled businessman and respected contractor.

J.D. was a man of strong convictions, independence, and an unwavering work ethic. He built his life and business through determination and persistence, overcoming many obstacles to achieve success in most everything he ventured into. Those who knew him through work, business, and friendship had a great respect for his knowledge, drive, kindness, humor, and generosity.

Away from work, J.D. found satisfaction in ranching and caring for horses. He took pride in running his ranch and enjoyed the western lifestyle he loved. He was a lifelong fan of Western films, especially those starring John Wayne, and he rarely passed up an opportunity to listen to the music of Willie Nelson. He was also a supporter of numerous charitable causes throughout his life and believed in giving back to others.

J.D. is survived by his sons, Danny Smith and David Smith; his sister, Wanda Taylor; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sonia Brown.

J.D. leaves behind a legacy built through hard work, entrepreneurial spirit, and determination. He will be remembered by family, friends, colleagues, and members of the construction community whose lives he touched over the years.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Laurel Land Funeral Home, 7100 Crowley Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76134.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Small Chapel at Laurel Land Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Everman Cemetery, 834 E Enon Ave, Fort Worth, TX 76140.
