Lafayette Jefferson, Jr., age 89, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas. Born on June 13, 1936, in Jefferson, Texas. He was a devoted family man, veteran, and lifelong member of the community. He was the 5th of 13 children of Lafayette Jefferson, Sr. and Ima Viola Sims Jefferson. Lafayette received his early education through the Jefferson School System in Marion County, Texas. After completing his schooling, he answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. Following his honorable military service, he embarked on a long career in construction and retired from R.E. Sweeney Lumber Company in Fort Worth, where he dedicated many years of hard work and commitment. He learned discipline and work ethics young while working chores and crops on their East Texas farm.
After arriving in Fort Worth, he met and married Margaret Nell Willis Allen. To this union, one child, Lafayette III was born. Following her death, he married Mildred Reed. Faith played a central role throughout Lafayette’s life. He first united with Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church in Lodi, Texas at an early age. Over the years, he continued his spiritual journey as a member of St. Matthew Baptist Church and Morningside United Methodist Church. He later became a charter member of Campus Drive United Methodist Church, where he remained devoted to his faith community. At Campus, he served as trustee and worked tirelessly in keeping and maintaining their new church by painting, watering plants, mowing yards and any project needing attention. Known for his love, kindness, and warm heart, Lafayette touched many lives with his generous spirit. His love for his family was extensive, and he went to any length for their well-being and comfort. He enjoyed helping people, talking with people and giving from the heart. He had a deep love for his parents and his family. As the oldest boy of his siblings, he made sure the younger ones were taken care of and had what they needed to survive. After moving away, he sent money home and brought goods upon his return visits. Lafayette had a deep love for the outdoors and found great joy in hunting both big and small game. His passion for adventure led him throughout Texas the country and annual trips to the western and northwestern United States in pursuit of memorable catches. He was a charter member of the Lewis Sportsman Hunting Club in Jefferson. He also cherished time spent fishing—another favorite pastime that brought him peace and satisfaction.
He was very civic-minded. He made sure he voted as well as participated in neighborhood community organizations, and associations. Among family and friends, and for church activities, Lafayette was especially known for his exceptional barbeque skills. Alongside his brother Henry, the two earned a reputation as the “dynamic duo,” perfecting their technique and flavor to create what many considered the tastiest barbeque around. Mr. Jefferson had exceptional skills and concepts about life. He was the "jack of all trades." He could fix anything. He kept all his vehicles, appliances, electrical, etc. working and in most instances did not need mechanics or repairmen. He was preceded in death by his spouses Margaret Willis Allen Jefferson and Mildred Reed Jefferson; his sons Lafayette Jefferson III and Donald Allen; his parents; and siblings Lucille High, Zilpha Smith, Louise Jefferson, Asberry (Sonny) Jefferson, James Jefferson, Veria Benson, and Henry Jefferson.
