Mary, affectionately known as “Monk”, was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Essie Mae Davis and Perry C. Johnson, Jr. on June 8, 1938. She grew up in the historical Riverside area of Fort Worth and matriculated in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Monk attended Williams Barber College becoming a licensed barber and proceeded to obtain her real estate license from Tarrant County Junior College.
Mary was employed with Texas Instruments and the Fort Worth Petroleum Club. However, her independent and entrepreneurial spirit allowed her to pursue opportunities with Cedar Hill Memorial Park as well as creating her own business named “The Candi Store”. For all that knew her she was an individual that had “one of everything” in her store.
On July 30, 1966, Mary married Charles Dewitt. They spent the next 57 years in highly spirited matrimony and raised six children. Though she is no longer with us, her spirit continues to inspire and guide us. We will always remember the joy and wisdom she brought into our lives, being the shoulder to cry on and the ear to listen. She will have a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband Charles R. Dewitt, Sr., Earnesta L. Carter (daughter) and Anthony E. Miller (son).
She is survived by her aunts Leola Brown and Murial Davis, brothers, James Wallace Johnson, Jr. and Louis Goodman, Jr, daughters Phylis A. Redmon, Frances Miller Sandlin and Cantrese R. Dewitt. She is also a proud grandmother of six: D’ondria Maxwell (Joseph), Earnie Carter, Kellee Gibson (Steve), Loysetta Jimerson, Amanda Sandlin and Camron Stewart as well as a host of nieces, nephews, great-grandchildren, cousins and friends.
The family of Mary wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Texas Best Hospice and Vilma Fernandez (caregiver) for her time, effort, and care during her final months.
