After retiring from the FAA I started my own lawn care business. One of my first customers was Nancy Lord. Over the ten years I ran the business I came to appreciate what a warm and caring person Nancy was. She always had a smile on her face. She was also very giving. We are still enjoying the rhubarb plants she gave us one year. 
I remember one week I came over to do her lawn and it was obvious it really could go another week due to the dry weather we were incurring. Nancy wasn't home so I went to her brother who lived on the property in the guest house. I told Bryant my dilemma and he said, "Nancy just loves the lines left in the lawn after you mow. She'll be as happy as a clam if you do it." I think it was more Nancy knew I had a lot of customers skipping a couple weeks due to the lack of rain and just wanted to help in her own way.
The second season I did her lawn I noticed her monthly payment exceeded what I had charged. I called her to let her know of the discrepancy . She advised me she had given me a raise. I told her she didn't have to do that. But she insisted. That happened a number of times over the ten years I cared for her property.
Once I was done with the mowing business my wife Doris and I would often run into her at the post office. She never failed to stop and talk with us even during the periods she was in a great deal of discomfort and using a walker to get around. She never complained while asking how we were doing. 
She was a remarkable woman with so many talents who always seemed to be more interested in your life and how you were doing. She is one of those women you can look back on and appreciate the fact you knew her and was a recipient of her kindness. My wife and I think of her often.
