Dick was born on March 31st 1940, to Mary and William Storm in Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo in 1958 and from there went on to college at the University of Toledo where he studied chemical engineering. While in college, Dick was in the Army ROTC leadership program and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. It was there that he met the love of his life and future wife, Dianne Sue Swank. Dick graduated in 1962 and married Dianne on August 25th that same year. After college, Dick served as a Lieutenant Officer in the US Army in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon leaving the army, Dick began a long and distinguished career in industrial coatings as a chemical engineer, starting with DuPont back in his hometown of Toledo. He went on to work in Orlando, FL, St. Louis, MO, Houston, TX, Jacksonville, TX, Omaha, NE and Hastings, IA before retiring to Fort Worth, TX. During their long life together, Dick and Dianne were blessed with three children: Richard “Rich” Storm, Bryan Storm and Andrea Storm Goy.
Dick had many interests and passions. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and bird watcher. Both Dick and Dianne had green thumbs and had enviable yards and gardens everywhere they lived. He loved to read, especially spy thrillers, and spent time doing Sudoku puzzles daily. He loved sports, especially the Texas Rangers and was thrilled to finally see them win the World Series. He loved his family and his children and grandchildren will miss their beloved “Poppy”, who always made it to every soccer game, concert and horse show, etc., rain or shine.
Upon retiring to Fort Worth, Dick and Dianne moved to the wonderful retirement community the Watermark at Broadway Cityview (formerly Brookdale) where they were blessed with many friends and a strong community of faith. Dick was very proud of his 2 year term as President of the Resident Association, during which he led the community through the Covid pandemic. He was a devoted member of the church there and loved singing in the choir and doing any behind the scenes work that was needed for the Sunday service. Dick had a ready smile, upbeat attitude and a kind heart. His acts of service and commitment to his Christian faith guided and shaped his entire life and he leaves behind a legacy of great love and compassion for his fellow man.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bryan in 2018 and his wife of sixty years in 2022, Dianne, whom he devotedly cared for during her long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Dick is survived by his son, Rich Storm (wife, Mandy) of Fort Worth, TX and daughter Andrea Goy (husband, Ryan) of Malvern, IA. His beloved grandchildren are Mike Storm (Houston, TX), Ashley, Grant and Alissa Goy (Malvern, IA) and Atticus Storm (Fort Worth, TX). The family wants to extend its special thank you to all the caregivers that served Dick, particularly in the last six months. We were blessed to have very special people with us in the last few days at Harris Methodist downtown Fort Worth.
Dick will be laid to rest with his wife and son in Toledo, OH later this month.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made in memory of Dick Storm to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
