On February 5, 2022 at Universal Health Services, God in his infinite wisdom and divine love called our beloved Sherman Gilbert home to rest.
Sherman Gilbert also known as “Catfish” was born October 1, 1942 in Natchitoches, Louisiana to the parentage of Joe Gilbert and Ina Mae Gilbert. He was the third born of seven siblings, including four brothers and two sisters. Sherman graduated from Pincrest High School class of 1960. He was later drafted in the United States Army where he served for 21 years. While stationed in El Paso, Texas Sherman met a beautiful young lady named Redo Lee Smith. After a period of courtship, they were united in holy matrimony on November 9,1978. To this union one child was born, which brought their blended family to seven children. Upon his migration to Fort Worth, Texas Sherman worked at Western House Electric and General Services Administration. He also received his EMT license. Later, he worked for the United States Postal Service Polytechnic Station where he was a dedicated mail carrier for 22 years until his retirement. After retiring Sherman loved to cook, take long walks, and take grandkids to and from school. He also enjoyed sitting outside on the porch and under the shade tree enjoying his favorite cold beverages, until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Leola Weston, parents Joe and Ina Mae Gilbert, four brothers Charles Ray Bryant, O’Neill Gilbert, Edgar Lee Gilbert, and Stafford Moses.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife of 43 years Redo Lee Gilbert; seven children Christopher Gilbert(Geraldine),
Robert Smith, Marcus Eleston, Sherman Eleston(Takoya), Darlene Armstead, Sharon Smith, and Stephanie Eleston; two sisters Helen Gilbert of Houston, Texas and Linda Pierce(Ken) of Canton, Michigan; 15 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
