Velta was born December 23, 1938, in Vermillion Parrish, Louisiana, to Camille and Lillian Miia LeMaire. A native of Louisiana, Velta lived most her life in Katy. She was a 1956 graduate of Port Neches-Groves High School where she was a member of the Indianettes. After graduation she attended the nursing school at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Beaumont on a scholarship from the Phelan Family. In 1959, Velta joined the U.S. Army as a Medical Specialist. She served 2 years and 3 months before being honorably discharged. The values and detail to organization were skills she learned in the Army, and she carried them throughout her life.
After working as Head of the EKG Department at Memorial City Hospital, now known as Memorial Herman Memorial City Hospital that serviced 13 cardiologists, she retired with 26 years of service. Retirement did not slow her down. Volunteering at her church, Second Baptist Church West Campus, kept her busy. She was a greeter on Sunday mornings, a bulletin stuffer, and worked diligently for the Tree of Light during the Christmas season.
Those who knew Velta knew of her love for children and animals. Children seemed to sense this and always gravitated toward her. She could charm any child at any time. The same is true for animals. She loved them and they knew it.
Never having had children of her own, she treated her nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews as they belonged to her. They lovingly called her "Nannie Teta" and she cherished the time she was able to spend with each one of them.
Velta was preceded in death by her father, Camille LeMaire; her mother, Lillian Miia LeMaire; sisters, Dorothy Faye LeMaire Cuniff and Shirley Ann LeMaire Reed; niece, Kim Leigh Reed Rogerson; and great nephews, Ryan Patrick Saunders and Jerry Don Cuniff. She is survived by 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 2 great nieces, 6 great nephews, 3 great-great nieces, and 6 great-great nephews, many friends, and extended family members.
Always in our hearts until we meet again...
