Thelma Mary Hopkins peacefully passed away on May 17, 2020 at the Carlyle House in Framingham, MA. She was born on January 10, 1931 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada to Madeline and Francis Cunningham. At a young age she worked in the Molasses Factory and then the Cotton Mill where she met the love of her life Roy Robert Hopkins. Their first date was on February 9th, 1949 and on June 4th, 1949 they were married and became inseparable.
In 1965 Roy and Thelma immigrated with their 5 children ages 2 to 14 to the United States and settled in the Boston area. There she raised her busy family while operating a daycare to help make ends meet.
Thelma was always doing for others. She loved her Lord and this showed in the compassion she had for others. Thelma’s kindness, and generosity extended far beyond her immediate family. She was loved by many and did not meet a stranger. She loved her church family and was always active in her local church. She was involved in many ministries including teaching and was a Christian Ed. director for several years, feeding the homeless, missions, and women’s ministry.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband Roy on February 6th, 2014. They were married 64 years. They had five children, Nancy (Aguilar), Robert Hopkins, Madeline (Hundy), Daisy (Donahue) and Peter Hopkins. They had 14 grandchildren: Lorena, Ana, Brandon, Angelique, Julie, Adam, Joshua, Joseph, Amanda, Steven, Roy, Christopher, Eli, Chloe and 16 great grandchildren. Thelma was preceded in death by her oldest sister Kathleen Leonard and is survived by three sisters in Canada, Madeline Hamm from St. John, New Brunswick, Marion Bannister from Alliston, Ontario and Dorothy (Dot) Meadus from Grates Cove Newfoundland. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Hopkins family thanks everyone for the cards, flowers, phone calls, prayers and encouraging words given during this difficult time. We also want to thank the Pastors and staff at Celebration International Church, Wayland Massachusetts. Interment will be private but a celebration of her life will be planned for a later date when we can all gather and remember her with joy.
